Campaigns Age Faster Than Brands

Campaign work is designed to be timely. That is exactly what makes it expire.

A brand is built to last. A campaign is built to land. Those are different jobs, and confusing them causes predictable damage. Campaign work borrows heavily from whatever feels current. That is what makes it effective in the moment and what makes it look dated fastest. The problem arrives when campaign language leaks upward into the brand system. The temporary typeface becomes the brand typeface. The campaign palette quietly replaces the real one. Six months later the brand is wearing last season's clothes and nobody can remember deciding that.

KEEP THE BOUNDARY EXPLICIT

The separation has to be structural, not cultural. Relying on everyone remembering which layer they are working in does not survive a deadline.

In practice this means the campaign system inherits from the brand system and never writes back to it. Campaign tokens extend brand tokens. Campaign components compose brand components.

When a campaign needs something the brand cannot express, that is worth noticing. Sometimes it means the campaign is off-brand. Sometimes it means the brand is genuinely missing something.

The second case should be handled deliberately, as a change to the brand system, with the reasoning recorded. Not absorbed by accident because a campaign shipped first.

PLAN THE ENDING

Campaigns are launched carefully and retired carelessly. Assets linger on secondary pages long after the campaign is over.

Set an end date at the start, in writing, alongside a list of everywhere the work appears. Someone has to own the removal, and it will not happen on its own.

The alternative is a site that accumulates layers: three generations of campaign styling, none removed, all slightly inconsistent with each other.

That accumulation is the most common reason a well-designed brand starts looking incoherent, and it has nothing to do with the original design.
